Introducing Penelope Chilvers - Leather Boots and Shoes

A natural artist

Born in England, Penelope Chilvers trained as a painter at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London from there she was granted a scholarship by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, to complete an MA at Complutense University in Madrid, one of the world's oldest most successful academic institutions.  Her degree allowed her to continue her life long love of Spain, and her vocation as an artist to 'see' into the mystique of Spanish culture and traditions.  As a child, she loved to wear the rustic, handmade alpargatas  beloved of local people.

Slow fashion* is critical to the circular economy this makes Penelope Chilvers a leader in their industry.   

They follow the Leather Working Group Standards sourcing almost exclusively from Certified Tanneries

Leather Working Group is a global multi-stakeholder initiative, founded in 2005, with over 2200 stakeholders internationally including tanneries, NGOs, suppliers, retailers, and auditors. Leather Working Group (LWG) was created to provide a global standard that assess the environmental performance of leather manufacturing operations.

This enables tanneries that are doing a great job with responsible leather manufacturers to stand out and be certified against the LWG standard, which enables ethical brands like Penelope Chilvers to make better choices in their sourcing. The tanneries are rated on a specific list of criteria including social compliance, wastewater, effluent treatment, and waste management, water and energy consumption, recycling, environmental practices, and traceability of hides.
