How to tighten a loose toilet seat
Typical pedestal toilet
Most modern pedestal toilets have an intergrated cistern together with a lid and seat both operated with a soft close mechanism to protect both the ceramic pedestal base and the lid and seat from damage.
Raise the toilet lid and seat
With the lid upright you will see two push buttons facing each other on the inside of each hinge. Push each button inward to release the seat from its hinge, then simply lift the entire seat off its hinges and place to one side.
Anchor Seat Pivots
With the seat out of the way you will see two anchor pivots with chrome discs and protruding from each one the hinge pivot. Simply lift each chrome disc and remove to access the adjustment screws.
Tighten the philips screw
Both pivot bases are fully adjustable to suit different seats. The Philips screw has come loose on one or both pivot bases. Reposition the pivot bases to line each pivot up with its hinge then tighten the screw with your Philips Screwdriver.
Replace the toilet seat
Pick up your toilet seat and check the pivot point on the hinge is pointing vertically downwards so that each pivot will line up with it's hinge and gently insert each pivot back in place. For best result push the seat assembly down firmly so that both pivots click in place together.
Test soft close mechanism
With the pivots bases firmly back in place the seat assembly should line up on the rim of the toilet bowl.
Simply close both the seat and the lid to make sure everthing lines up.

How to bleed a radiator
Wall Mounted Radiator
Every radiator in your home operates through the central heating system. Most of the time it does its job and keeps you warm, until air gets trapped it the system.
Don't worry the fix is very simple but you will need a radiator key.
You can protect your central heating with Everbuild P14 Central Heating System Inhibitor, it is a multi-purpose treatment designed to protect your entire central heating system from scale, sludge and corrosion.
Water Flow Diagram
It may help to know what is happening.
The pump on your central heating system circulates water through the pipe work. At any point for a number of reasons air gets into the pipework and into one or more radiators.
Actually to help cut down on your heating bills all radiators should be checked for air each autumn before you switch on the heating for the winter.
Where to find Bleed Valve
The valve is just a plug: A bleed valve is simply a screw-in plug with a small air vent. It is always the valve at the top of the radiator.
Just to bed sure, the plug on the opposite side is just a blanking plug. No need to touch that plug,
Because the air pressure is equalized across the top of the radiator, opening the valve on either side will successfully purge the trapped air from the entire unit.
Air Bleed Valve Point
Air naturally rises: When air gets trapped in your central heating system, it will always rise to the highest possible point because it is less dense than water.
Since your radiator is horizontal, the air forms a pocket across the entire top section, regardless of whether that air is sitting on the left or right side.
Sirius Brass Radiator Bleed Key
The Sirius Brass Radiator Bleed Key is a premium, trade-quality plumbing hand tool designed specifically for safely releasing trapped air pockets from domestic and commercial heating systems.

Escaping Air
Switch off your central heating and wait 30 to 60 minutes for the system to cool down completely.
Fit the radiator key onto the central square pin. Turn the key slowly counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise), usually just a quarter to a half turn. You will hear a distinct hissing sound, which is the trapped air escaping. Do not unscrew the pin completely, as it can be very difficult to screw back in while water is gushing out.

How to treat black mould
What is Black Mould
Spores of black mould are microscopic, dust-like reproductive cells released into the air by dark
coloured fungi.
They function similarly to plant seeds, allowing the mould colony to multiply and spread.
While many types of indoor fungi look dark, the term "black mould" most commonly refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxic strain that thrives on water damaged, cellulose-rich building
materials like drywall, wallpaper, and wood.
What to Avoid
Do not use standard bleach on porous walls: While bleach removes the dark stains on the surface, its high water content can actually sink into porous materials including plasterboard and feed the mould roots underneath, causing it to return quickly.
Health Impacts
Inhaling or touching airborne black mould spores can cause health issues, especially when concentration exceeds normal outdoor levels.
Allergic Reactions: The immune system can react to the spores, causing sneezing, runny
noses, red or itchy eyes, and skin rashes.
Respiratory Issues: Spores can irritate the airways, triggering coughing, wheezing,
breathlessness, or severe asthma attacks.
Avoid Extreme Exposure: Mycotoxins: Stachybotrys chartarum spores sometimes carry toxic chemicals called
mycotoxins.
In extreme or prolonged exposure cases, this can lead to chronic fatigue, headaches, or cognitive issues.

Warm soapy water to clean
For the larger mould colonies that you are able to access at ground level use a mixture of warm soapy water to clean the residual mould after you have sprayed it.
If it is in an an inaccessible place such as behind a radiator or furniture use the mini roller kit as a cleaner after you have sprayed the area.
Out of reach mould colony
Older properties are prone to black mould forming around windows, or high up on walls and ceilings.
We do not recommend the use of ladders where the mould is out of reach.
Remain at floor level and use the extended length mini roller with the Ronseal 3 in 1 solution in the mini roller tray.
if the mould is around ten feet or more from the ground then do as the professional do, do not take risks, use the Handy THS5LTR pressure spray kit with an extended reach hose.

How to repair a leaking tap
⚠️ The Combi Boiler Trap
A leaking tap is a very simple repair, on this page we'll help you keep it simple.
If you are watching online tutorials, 80% of them will tell you to just buy a cheap rubber washer. What they don't tell you about is the difference in water pressure between traditional gravity feed systems (which means you have a tank in the loft and a copper cylinder in your airing cupboard) and a recently installed Combi boiler.
If your home has a modern combi boiler, your pipes are under much higher mains pressure. This means you likely have a modern quarter-turn ceramic tap. If your new Combi boiler was installed without changing the taps your old tap compression washers are wearing out at triple the speed. Don't waste time buying the wrong parts—let's identify your system correctly.
We only deal with reputable suppliers, companies that offer a complete service, on line assistance and money back guarantees. Follow these simple image guides to make the right choice of tools for the job and the right parts that you will order.
Two Kinds of Domestic Taps
Traditional and Quarter Turn
Traditional Taps
The screw-down compression tap has been around a very long time.
Compression taps were engineered for the gentle, low-pressure flow of old UK gravity systems (with a cold water tank in the loft and a hot cylinder in the airing cupboard). They are still the installation of choice in thousands of households.
How they Operate
Turning the handle multiple times opens or closes the tap.
The mechanism how it works
A screw mechanism presses a rubber washer against a metal seat moulded into the tap's body.
Why it leaks
The rubber washer perishes, hardens, or splits over time.
Spares for Traditional Taps
This is the kind of valve in a traditional tap. At its base is the rubber washer which needs to be replaced from time to time because it wears out. On the top of the screw thread is an O Ring which can also wear out causing water to leak around the tap body.
This 1/2" valve is suitable to replace most standard compression valves. It is precision machined from brass. If you prefer to buy the assembly complete we recommend you buy two, one for each tap.
Suitable to replace either hot or cold sides for bathroom & kitchen taps

The Tools You Will Need to Repair Taps
Repair - Step One
Before you do any work on the tap you must do two things 1) Turn off the water supply to the tap 2) Place the plug in the outlet to stop any small grub screws or parts falling into the outlet pipework.
Whether your tap is traditional or quarter turn the first tool you will need is a flat blade screwdriver. All DIY people need a set of screwdrivers. This Kinchrome 8 piece set is an ideal low cost solution. Select the flat blade to gently prise off the H or C ceramic top of a traditional tap or on a quarter turn tap the chrome cover over the grub screw you will find at the rear of the turn handle.
The Kincrome Torquemaster screwdriver range was designed to provide a comfortable, secure and non-slip grip in the hand and deliver up to 50% more turning power than standard alternatives. The blades are made from hardened, tempered and satin chrome plated S3 SVCM alloy steel with magnetic tips for greater fastener control.
Kincrome Torquemaster Screwdriver SetThis set includes eight of the most common slotted, Phillips and Pozi screwdriver types needed for general repair, maintenance and construction applications.
Price: YOU SAVED 33% was
£14.99 now just £9.99 inc VAT £8.33 (ex VAT)
Delivery charges extra as advised
Repair - Step Two
Place the flat blade screwdriver to one side. With either or both the H & C inserts removed you will see a philip screw which you will need to remove in step two. Or with the small cover removed from the quarter turn handle you will see a grub screw for which you will need your Allen Keys in step two.
The Bosch Professional 9 Piece Allen Keys Set is a hardened hex key set designed for tradespeople who need reliable, precise fastening in professional environments.
Manufactured from S2 hardened steel, the keys are engineered to resist rounding off under repeated torque, maintaining their integrity across heavy daily use. The comfortable length of each key provides the leverage needed for efficient tightening and loosening of hex profile screws.
Repair - Step Three
Next, depending on your tap, if a traditional use your philips screw driver from your Kinchrome set to unscrew the philips screw in the tap head, or, if it is a quarter turn tap use an Allen key from the Boch Professional 9 piece set to release the grub screw at the rear of the handle. Be careful where you put the grub screw you will need it in a few minutes.
With the tap head or handle removed you will see the insert which you need to access. But here you must take care. A lock nut holds the insert secure, it may be very tight from limestone deposits or grit. Grip the body of the tap with your Draper Soft Jaw Pliers and then turn the adjustable spanner anti clockwise to release the lock nut.
The Draper Soft Jaws Waterpump Pliers are professional-grade adjustable pliers designed specifically for working with decorative chrome, brass and bright plated fittings without causing surface damage. Manufactured from chrome vanadium steel that has been hardened, tempered and chemically blacked, these 245mm pliers deliver reliable performance across plumbing and heating installations.
The soft nylon jaws provide secure grip on delicate finishes whilst the eight-position adjustment system accommodates pipe and fitting diameters up to 40mm maximum capacity. Cushion-grip handles ensure comfortable use during extended work, whilst the integrated 'no-nip' feature prevents the handles from locking together and trapping users' hands during operation.
The pliers are universal, you can remove the soft grip inserts for other metal to metal jobs around the house.
Repair - Step Four
Use the adjustable spanner to undo and remove the lock nut. Both traditional and quarter turn taps employ a lock nut to hold the insert in place. With the lock nut removed simply lift the insert out of the tap body. A compression tap insert is precision ground brass, whereas a cartridge insert is made of either brass or an injection moulded engineering plastic. The brass inserts come as a pair and have a RED or BLUE washer at the base.
Your new Sealey quick action adjustable spanner is manufactured from drop forged Chrome Vanadium steel.
The Quick-action mechanism enables fast jaw size adjustments without the need for manual screw turning.
The 22.5° Angled head allows for improved access in hard-to-reach areas. TPR soft grip handle enhances control and reduces slippage. Polished satin chrome finish for corrosion resistance. Hanging hole for easy storage solutions.
We only recommend quality tools, don't buy unbranded cheap tools.
Step Five
Now you know which kind of insert you need, brass for your traditional taps or a polycarbonate cartridge for your quarter turn tap.
Remember you do not need to buy the brass insert, it is a very simple job now you have the brass insert out.
There will be a screw fastener holding your old worn washer in place. Use one of your Kinchrome screw driver to undo the washer. Measure it against the black washers and order your pack right now here.
Step Six
If you have a quarter turn tap the insert is possibly similar to the image above that is because your your quarter turn insert is made of brass.
Now! Which way did it open, clockwise or anticlock wise depending if the tap was on the left or the right of your sink. Don't order the wrong one.
You have to carefully measure it too, but if you are unsure our supplier's online resource wlll help you make the right choice. It is a good idea to check yourself, that will help you overcome any DIY jitters, we are here to help.
The link below takes you to a page of different cartridge inserts - take your time to look at one that is nearest to yours. Click on it and you will see a full description and most important a diagram with measurements.
Compare your inserts measurements. Last but very important at the top is what is known as the spline, it is round and has teeth. The bigger diameter the spline the more teeth it has. Every single image has that kind of information to help you make the right choice.
It really is a simple, clever way for you to solve your problem and order your inserts with confidence.
Step Seven
If fhe cartridge you have is like the one above you have a Mixer Tap and not a single lever tap, it is an easy mistake, but quickly solved because we can help you find that cartridge too.
Your tap is leaking because the ceramic discs in the cartridge are scored.
The link below takes you to a page of different plastic cartridge inserts - take your time to look at one that is nearest to yours. Click on it and you will see a full description and most important a diagram with measurements.
Compare your inserts measurements with those provided, take your time, use a good quality tape measure in millimetres.
It really is a simple, clever way for you to solve your problem and order your inserts with confidence.
Step Eight
Once you have repaired or replaced your insert it is time to re-assemble the tap.
With the insert in place use your adjustable spanner to tighten the lock nut down. If you wish you can use the soft jaw pliers to hold the tap body in place as you give the lock nut a final turn.
For a traditional tap replace the head, using the philips screwdriver to tighten the head to the insert with the philips screw.
For a quarter turn tap push the tap head over the spline or for mixer taps the plastic stem, align the tap head and insert the grub screw and tighten it in place with the your Boch Allen Key.
Now pop the H or C cover back on or the plastic cover over the grub screw access.
Your last job is to turn the water back on and test the tap.
