Afternoon Tea with a Twist

Is there a new Happy Hour - we take a look at a more informal interpretation of that quaint British tradition - Afternoon Tea.

Gen Z's are driving a new trend in exotic experiences, exploring the tastes of India and Japan in their quest for new, healthier ingredients from sustainable sources. The USA has taken Afternoon Tea to its heart and we highlight how LA is doing this new kind of 'Happy Hour'.

Matcha Rituals: The spiritual and aesthetic aspects of the Japanese Matcha tea ceremony, involves mindful preparation and presentation using a bamboo whisk (chasen).  There is a significant aesthetic appeal in the vibrant green colour and frothy texture of matcha, often paired with elegant tea ware. The Japanese tea ceremony (Chadō), with its emphasis on harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility, focuses on holistic well-being and appreciation for traditions that offer moments of calmness and reflection.

While traditional teas like Darjeeling remain popular, the heart of Indian afternoon tea lies in its spiced chai, especially Masala Chai. There are other delightfully aromatic options including Ginger Chai, Cardamom Chai, and even Rose Chai. Instead of dainty finger sandwiches, you will often find an array of flavorful Indian snacks such as samosas, pakoras, kachori, and bhel puri.  Indian-inspired sandwiches could include spicy egg and spinach wraps or cucumber chutney cheese sandwiches. Complementing the savory snacks are Indian desserts like gulab jamun, kheer, kulfi, and a variety of Indian-inspired cakes and pastries similar to the choice in the High Tea experience in Mumbia.
